Smith & Wesson Model 586 Dash-0 8’3/8” bbl w/spare 4” bbl
Description: This is perhaps one of Smith & Wesson’s most important models. The 586 was intended to allow the shooter to have a revolver chambered for the 357 Magnum that could handle firing the cartridge on a regular basis. The original Model 19 in .357 Magnum was built under the premise of carrying the gun with .357 Magnum ammo for duty, but practice shooting the revolver with .38 Special ammo. When many tried shooting them with .357 ammo regularly, the frames began to crack, rendering them useless. As such, a new frame larger than the “K” (upon which the Model 19 was built) was needed. This resulted in the slightly larger “L” frame, from which many of Smith & Wesson’s most popular models are built on, the 586 being one of these. This is the original “Dash-0” variation. This was the first version and as such did not have a dash number. It features a long 8.375-inch barrel – excellent for target shooting or even deer hunting as some have used the 586 for that purpose. Other features of this revolver include a square butt frame, .400-inch serrated target trigger, .375-inch semi-target hammer, 1/8” Patridge front target sight, and Micrometer-click rear sight. The serrated backstrap has 10 grooves. The grips are traditional checkered wood and are quite beautiful. Smith & Wesson refers to these as “target stocks.” The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured in 1985. The Model 586 has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting. It has also been used by law enforcement. The .357 is a powerful cartridge, and many appreciate it for firepower to this day. It has even been used to disable a moving vehicle by putting a round through the car’s engine block on more than one occasion. This revolver is pre-owned, but the bore looks like it left the factory yesterday. It has been well cared for the most part. There is minor wear on the backstrap. Otherwise, the 586 is in excellent condition. The box exhibits water damage, but the internal paperwork has not been affected. The spare barrel is not original to the firearm and was purchased separately. It exhibits finish wear on both sides, but the bore is in spectacular condition. One interesting aspect of this beautiful firearm is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a desirable feature of the older S&W revolvers and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this feature. This revolver would be an excellent addition to any S&W owner’s collection.
