1st or 2nd Year Smith & Wesson Model 60 .38 Special Revolver
** First Stainless Steel Revolver Model by S&W! **
SOLD
Description: This was truly a revolutionary model revolver for Smith & Wesson as it was the very first revolver manufactured by the firm in stainless steel. This example is serial number 410179 was made in either the first or second year of production in 1965 or 1966. The early production guns like this one came with a polished (bright) stainless steel finish and had polished stainless hammers and triggers. This was soon changed to a satin stainless steel finish and a color case hardened finish on the hammer and trigger still used to this day. These early polished finish guns are few and far between as not many were made before S&W changed to the later finishes. This example is in excellent condition overall and is very attractive. It has been used but has been well-cared for. There are a few small handling/use marks in the finish and a light turn ring on the cylinder if you look closely, but it has a nice clean look to it overall. The checkered Walnut factory grips on this Model 60 are the correct type and fit nicely, but have a different serial number on them. They appear to have been on the gun a long time despite the non-matching serial number and are in excellent condition, free from cracks, chips, or repairs. The bore is in excellent shape, with no pitting, erosion, or imperfections visible. The rifling looks crisp, with sharp lands and grooves still showing throughout. The cylinder bores are equally as clean as the barrel. They show no pitting or imperfections. The action on this S&W Model 60 are in perfect working order. The action is perfectly "in time" and locks up tight with zero play in it at full lock. Like most revolvers made by S&W during this time, the action is buttery smooth and the trigger is superb. This is he oppotunity to own one of the first examples of a very important milestone in Smith & Wesson handguns. It would be nearly impossible to find a better example of this super early Model 60 with these features.
