The Model 686 is the de-facto standard of the Smith & Wesson medium-frame revolver line. It has been used for every purpose from self-defense to target shooting and by a great many people. Like its blued finish cousin, the Model 586, the 686 was designed to correct then existent strength issues with its predecessor, the stainless K-frame Model 66 by using the new, slightly larger L-frame. That Smith & Wesson succeeded with the 686 can be attested to by the fact that the model has been in continuous production since 1980. The example here is a No Dash version produced in 1987 according to the Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition. This seems odd as the No Dash version was supposedly replaced by the 686-1 in 1986, and that model replaced by the 686-2 in 1987. It features a 6-inch, full-lug barrel, stainless finish, and a red ramp front sight insert. The rear sight does not have a white outline like on later S&W 686s. The trigger is a 0.312-inch smooth combat trigger and the 686 also has a 0.375-inch semi-target hammer. The revolver has been equipped with Packmayr “Gripper” grips, i.e. rubber grips with finger grooves in place. The revolver has seen some use given the light powder burns on the front of the cylinder and the minor wear marks in the steel. However, the 686 is otherwise in excellent shape for its age. The rear sight is not dinged or damaged in any way. The front sight is the early type built integral with the barrel and with a flat top. Despite the powder burns on the cylinder the bore is quite clean. Mechanically the revolver has a very light single-action pull. It would make a nice shooter.
