Smith & Wesson K-38 Model 15 Combat Masterpiece 38 SPL
Description: The K-38 Combat Masterpiece was introduced in 1949 and produced under that name until 1957. Afterward it was renamed the Model 15 and produced until 1999. It used the same square butt K target frame as the K-38 Masterpiece (Pre-Model 14). The K-38 Combat Masterpiece and its successor use a 4-inch ribbed barrel. This example has the 4-inch pined and ribbed barrel with a 1/8” Baughman Quick Draw front sight on a plain ramp base. The rear sight is a Micrometer-click adjustable type. The front strap and backstrap have the standard 10-groove serrations. The 15 here has a .375-inch semi-target hammer and, a .265-inch serrated combat trigger. The serial number indicates the year of production to be 1958, according to the Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition. This is odd, as the frame is NOT marked Model 15. Smith & Wesson began stamping the frames with a model number in 1957. All that exists on the inside frame opposite the yoke (or crane) are a bunch of internal factory numbers as is usually found on a pre-1957 revolver. The most likely reason for this unusual situation is that S&W had many left-over frames made before 1957 and continued to assemble guns from older parts until the supplies ran out. As a result, this revolver could be considered either as a post-1957 K38 or as a transitional model. The Model 15 is most remembered for its role as the sidearm of LAPD Officers Malloy and Reed in the TV show Adam 12 from season 3 and onward. Previously they had been issued with the Model 14 with its 6-inch barrel which was true for the LAPD as well. The change to the 15 with its 4-inch barrel allowed police officers to draw their revolvers faster at the cost of a slight reduction in accuracy. The K38 shown was most likely carried as a side arm by law enforcement as it has a noticeable amount of holster wear at the very tip of the barrel. The bottom of the trigger guard and the top of the frontstrap also exhibit some finish loss. The bottom of the grip has a combination of light finish wear and micro-dings in the grips usually found on ex-law enforcement firearms. The sides of the grips are worn in the checkering due to frequent handling. There is light rust on both the hammer and trigger which is not surprising. While color case hardening is beautiful to look at, it is not very rust resistant. The rear sight is in great shape with no dings or rust that would inhibit using the sights to aim. Mechanically, the K38 operates perfectly and the bore is in excellent condition. It would make a fantastic target pistol. If not used for target competition, the 15 would be suited to plinking or teaching a new shooter how to use a revolver. It would also be useful for home defense. The 38 Special round it is chambered for is well suited for all these tasks and is available in a wide variety of bullet types and loads.
