This 1956 N-Frame five-screw double action revolver is a Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 27 chambered in .357 Magnum. This is the first Magnum model that Smith & Wesson built. It is the only model to have the checkered top strap and rib and is considered the top of the line. They were justifiably proud of the revolver and lavished all their knowledge and expertise on it. It has the satin blued finish, a fixed blade front sight, a micrometer click adjustable rear sight, a case-hardened and grooved trigger, a 6½" pinned barrel, a fluted, counterbored cylinder, and an extra wide, checkered and case-hardened hammer. The rear face of the cylinder is marked "158731" consistent with the serial on the butt of the frame. As Smith and Wesson's top of the line model, they reserved the checkered top strap and rib to and for that model alone. "This is the finest handgun we make, period," and we lavish a lot of attention to detail on THIS revolver.
