Smith&Wesson 38/44 converted to .45 long colt
Description: Up for review is an interesting heavy duty N framed revolver made before WW II and reworked by Hamilton Bowen to handle the .45 long colt cartridge. The gun began life as a model 38/44 chambered in the .38 special caliber with a four inch barrel but designed to take on hotter loads than the typical .38 special revolvers of the time. This model gun was first introduced in 1930 in an effort to provide authorities with a weapon capable of disabling illegal alcohol runner cars that happened to be prevalent during the prohibition era. It took its ques from S&W's original tripple lock revolver manufactured until about 1915 which was considered to be the best revolver this company ever produced. The heavy under carriage protecting the cylinder pin with the tappered barrel, fixed sights, and slightly enlarged cylinder provided a well ballanced handgun that was strong enough to handle not only hot .38 caliber loads but perhaps a larger more powerful caliber as well. The pistol was never commercially produced in the larger calibers until more modern times when several gunsmiths turned their attention to this effort. How many have been converted in this way is open to question but I would doubt that number to be very high. Original production of these revolvers by S&W occured from 1930 to 1941 and then again from 1946 to 1966. Those made after the war had an S in the prefix of their serial number and those made before 1941 had only numbers. Mr. Bowen converted this revolver to the present caliber a number of years back by reboring it for the stated caliber and doing the same thing to its cylinder. A reblue followed at his shop with no doubt some work on the action as it is the very best I've ever seen on any revolver. The trigger and hammer were re-case hardened by Turnbull. The pistol to my knowledge has not been fired since this work was done. It remains in near mint condition with only a cylinder ring and one small blemish on the back strap. The only thing that would distinguish it from an originial 38/44 would be its caliber and the lanyard ring placed by Mr.Bowen during his reconstruction. Hopefully my photos will provide visual conformation of my verbal contentions. This is a really nice revolver made even better by one of the masters of the trade. It would make a wonderful carry or home protection piece. A Ken Null shell horse hide right sided hip holster will accompany the gun. Thanks for taking a look. Jack SOLD Handgun Caliber: .45 Colt |
