Smith & Wesson Triple-Lock 3-digit S/N 6.5-in. 44 Russian, Lawman’s Sidearm w/Jinks Letter
Description: Update: It has been determined that this revolver is actually chambered for the .44 Special, not the .44 Russian. This is perhaps one of Smith & Wesson’s most historically important models. Although the technical name is .44 Hand Ejector, 1st Model, this revolver was and is more commonly known as the New Century or Triple Lock. The New Century effectively introduced what we know today as the N frame. All S&W large frame revolvers share their origin in the New Century design, such as the .38/44 Hand Ejector/Models 20/23 in .38 Special, the .357 Registered Magnum/Model 27/327/627 in .357 Magnum, the Highway Patrolman/Model 28 also in .357 Magnum, the Models 57/58/657 in 41 Magnum, the Models 21 and 24 in .44 Special, the Model 29/629 in 44 Magnum, the British .455 Hand Ejector, the U.S. Army’s Model 1917 and Models 22/25/625 in .45 ACP, with some Model 25’s chambering the famous .45 Long Colt. The New Century is a double action revolver built on a square butt N frame with five screws. It came with a pinned barrel in a length of 4-inch, 5-inch, 6-1/2”, or 7-1/2”. What sets the New Century apart from its descendants is the third very distinctive lock at the yoke, which is where the nickname “Triple Lock” comes from. It was this revolver model that the famous Elmer Keith used to test his high pressure .44 Special loads to prove that S&W N-frame revolvers could handle high pressure loads. His work ultimately led to the creation of the .44 Remington Magnum cartridge. This Triple Lock’s features include: a 6.5-inch 1/2-lug barrel, square butt frame, 0.312-inch smooth trigger, .265-inch checked hammer, fixed sights, and the original checked walnut non-medallion grips. The letter from S&W historian Roy G. Jinks indicates this revolver was shipped from the factory on September 9, 1910. Interestingly, the serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured in 1908. It should be remembered though, that in those days, a revolver might be stamped with a serial number but then sit in the factory for a while before being shipped out. It was shipped to E.K. Tryon Co. in Philadelphia, PA. It ended up as the duty gun of Deputy Sheriff George Mayes Stephenson originally from Anahuac, TX. He served as the deputy sheriff for Chambers County, Texas. Based on research by the Chamber’s County Historical Society, it has been determined that he participated in at least one gunfight, and was well respected. Sadly, on the night of May 9th, 1936, while on duty, George’s horse threw him, resulting in a fractured skull and a brain injury. He passed away the next day at the age of 57. Interestingly, this event also affected the Triple Lock as well. When George hit the ground, he did so on the side of the body that his revolver was holstered on. The cylinder took the brunt and one of the chambers was affected. When attempting to load all six cylinders with ammunition, only 5 rounds will fully seat, the sixth will not. As can be seen in the photos, the pistol has had a rough life since then. Due to its age, it isn’t recommended to shoot this revolver. The original bluing has turned to a heavy patina, and the exterior exhibits severe pitting. The bore is also pitted. Mechanically, the cylinder still rotates correctly. The serial number is still visible on the bottom of the pistol grip and the back of the cylinder. The patent stamps on the top of the barrel are worn to some extent due to the pitting. Overall, the revolver’s condition is not surprising given the time it was made and well as its use as a duty gun. It is interesting to see a S&W revolver with only a 3-digit serial number, however. This firearm comes with a nice case which includes a metal plate inscribed with “Smith and Wesson 1st Model Hand Ejector .44 Caliber Russian Swing Out Cylinder Serial #232”. As mentioned in the update above, this is incorrect. Also included are the S&W Letter of Authenticity, a copy of George’s death certificate, and a card written by George’s granddaughter, Mrs. Joanne H. Neubauer.
