Description: *SALE PENDING* Jeremiah Johnson Trading is one of the most experienced and trusted dealers of antique arms with over 40 years of collecting. We also specialize in antique cars & petroliana, Revolutionary and Civil War artifacts, 19th century nautical & western memorabilia, early Bowie and folding knives, American folk art, and colonial era furnishings. Visit us online at JeremiahJohnsonTrading or find us on Facebook. Our shop is located at 1622 Saybrook Rd. Haddam, CT. Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Very Rare Commercial Issue Model 1875 Smith & Wesson Model 3 Second Model Schofield Single Action Revolver, Nickel Plated with Ivory Grips & Factory Letter, .45 S&W, mfg. 1877. The Schofield revolver was developed by Major George W. Schofield in 1875 for use by the United States cavalry alongside the Colt Single Action Army however due to non-interchangeable ammunition between the two (the Colt would accept either cartridge while the Schofield could only chamber .45 S&W) the Schofield was dropped with all military contracts awarded to Colt. Within their short production run of just three years 8,284 revolvers were manufactured for the US government with only 685 for commercial sales. They have become an iconic weapon of the old West and are highly sought after today. The revolver offered here is a 100% original unmolested example of a true cowboy used commercial issue Schofield. Overall the pistol retains 40% factory nickel finish with the balance having worn to a dark gray patina with some very fine pinprick surface pitting scattered around the cylinder and a few spots along the left side of the barrel and frame. The original retailer installed ivory grips fit perfectly and have tons of character showing a dark marbled yellow color. There is a small chip at the front left toe and a thin chip on the right upper edge. Original hammer, trigger & triggerguard, blade front sight, unique Schofield thumb barrel latch, and all original screws. Matching serial numbers with clear Schofield patent markings on the right side of the barrel. The Smith & Wesson patents on the left side of the barrel are partially obscured by pinprick pitting. The action is perfectly crisp and functions flawlessly. The barrel opens and closes securely against the frame with little to no play and the spring loaded cartridge extractor functions just as it should. Excellent bore showing bright, clean, and sharp rifling front to back with only minor blackpowder frosting. A two page Smith & Wesson factory letter is included detailing the Schofield's history and confirming this gun's configuration as a factory nickel plated commercial issue with S&W retailer installed ivory grips. An extremely rare variant in totally original condition that will make a choice addition to any collection. *NOTE: Due to ivory restrictions this revolver will not be sold or shipped to residents of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington.
