Smith & Wesson 1881 (COPY!!) D/A 6”x 44WCF (44/40)
Description: #4810 Smith & Wesson 1881 (COPY!!) D/A 6”x 44WCF (44/40), with a somewhat spasmodic action. The cylinder rotates all the time, but many times the hammer does not cock on D/A mode it and must be fired S/A. But, it does lock up nicely when used as a single action, and fixing it to work properly should be a relatively simple fix, probably just a missing or broken trigger return or some-such. Also, the bore codition is unknown due to the families of spiders and other unnamed creatures that have lived there and left their dust and dead prey behind. I’d bet that the bore will clean pretty danged nice since the exterior is very nice, but I’m just too lazy and un-motivated to pick up a brush and try running it through to find out! Ha-ha! (….Well, it’s funny to me, at least!) As with many of these S&W copies, it is marked on the barrel top flat, “FOR 44 WINCHESTER CARTRIDGE”. However, I’m not up on what country the foreign proof marks are from, but I think that it’s safe to assume it was NOT nitro-proofed and thus is a pre-1899 antique black powder gun! The exterior has no pitting at all and about 70% original nickel with a 50-60% density. The checkered walnut grips are to a legitimate S&W grips of some age, model, and type, and are at best, just a “so-so” fit, but could be made a bit better with some minor wood working. Oh, and it is factory stamped on the underside of the forestrap “T.T.&C”, whatever THAT means! Overall it’s a very big, impressive, and decent looking frontier revolver…and a mighty cheap holster filler! $465 SOLD Antique: Yes |
