Smith & Wesson Model 624 No Dash .44 SPL Stainless 3-inch Lew Horton Combat Special
Description: The Model 624 traces its origins all the way back to the .44 Hand Ejector 1st Model also known as the .44 New Century or the .44 Military Model of 1908. After progressing through the 2nd and 3rd Models, the .44 Hand Ejector 4th Model Target (a.k.a. Model of 1950 .44 Target came into being, often referred to as the pre-Model 24. This version was produced from 1950 until 1957 when the revolver was given the designation Model 24. It continued in production until 1966. The Model 24 and its predecessors had, of course, been made using carbon steel. However, in 1985, Smith & Wesson introduced a stainless steel version as the Model 624. The standard version came with either a 4-inch barrel or a 6.5-inch barrel and had a square-but frame just like the original Model 24. Lew Horton, then a well-known wholesaler, ordered a special run of 3-inch-barreled Model 624s with target sights and a round butt frame. This version was marketed as the Model 624 Lew Horton Combat Special. Features other than the 3-inch barrel, round butt frame, and target sights included a 6-shot fluted cylinder, .400-inch checkered hammer, .312-inch smooth combat trigger, shrouded extractor rod, and Smith & Wesson Goncalo Alves combat grips. 5,000 of this subvariant were produced between 1985 and 1987. Known serial number prefixes include AHT and ALW. The product code was 103580. One very important thing to remember about this revolver is that the barrel equipped is the “pencil” or tapered/light type. Other models, such as the Model 29 or 657, when equipped with a 3-inch barrel have the much thicker heavy barrel, to handle the pressures the .44 Magnum and .41 Magnum are generally loaded to. While the .44 Special can certainly be hot loaded, it is inadvisable to fire them through the thinner barrel shown here, at it could result in physical harm to both the 624 and the user. The wood grips exhibit some nicks or light dings in the surface, while there is some flaking of the finish near the bottom edge. There are no real powder burns on the cylinder face, and bore is fairly clean. It is possible that the 624 has not been fired since leaving the factory, though it could just be that the revolver has had less than a box fired through it in that time frame. Either way, the bore is extremely clean. There is some very minor wear on the barrel on the left hand side, it being more visual in nature than physical as it can not be felt by fingertip. There are some minor scratches in the cylinder, but nothing serious. Sadly, the original box is not present. Overall, this 624 is in excellent shape and would make a fine addition to any Smith & Wesson collection.
