Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Nathan Starr Model 1816 Flintlock musket made circa 1830 in Middletown, Connecticut. The War of 1812 revealed many weaknesses in American muskets. In an attempt to improve both the design and manufacture of the musket, the Model 1812 musket was created. The Model 1816 made further improvements and replaced the Model 1812. The Model 1816 was a smoothbore, muzzle loading weapon which used a .69 caliber musket ball. Over 675,000 Model 1816s were manufactured at the national armories and thousands more were manufactured by private contractors. Many of these muskets were converted to percussion and saw use into the Civil War era. Nathan Starr Jr. manufactured 15,530 Model 1816s in 1829-1840 in Middletown, Connecticut. Nearly all Starr muskets are reported to have had the armory bright finish.

These were some of the most abundant weapons available to both sides, being in the hands of the state militias, in the first days of the American Civil War. This musket is symbolic for the westward expansion of the country throughout the first half of the 19th century. The M1816 Springfield saw service in the Texan Revolution including the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. After the independence of Texas, the 1816 musket was chosen as the first standard musket of the Texan Army in 1839.

This example features a blade front sight on the rear of the upper barrel band, standard proofs, “1831” on the barrel tang, “US” over a sunburst over “N STARR” in an arch at the center of the lock, “MIDDLT/CONN/1830” followed by a floral motif/star at the tail of the lock.


The overall condition is fine. Original brown patina. Strong action. The bore is bright and smooth. This example retains its original flintlock configuration. Markings are sharp. A well-defined cartouche is present on the left stock flat. Fine stock with little handling wear and a small missing sliver is present on the right wrist just above the lock.
