Antique 1863 Starr Single Action Conversion To .44 Colt Center Fire. Tight Action With 50% Finish... Fairly Rare.
Description: SOLD... Antique Starr 1863 Single Action Conversion to .44 Colt Center Fire. Here is a very seldom seen for sale Starr Single Action Conversion.. I see one other for sale on this sight. You see the Starr 1858 double action conversions for sale that were converted to the .45 Colt with the Belgian proof markings far more often than you do the single actions. This is only the second one I have had for sale in over 30 years and can not remember seeing another one for sale within those years until today.. These single actions seen Civil War and frontier use as they were very well made and function much better than the double actions. The Starr conversions were being converted in the mid to later 1870's as per the great book written by the late Bruce McDowell.. He has a section starting on page 431 of this book about these Starr conversions.. .. There is a S/N on the barrel in the hammer slot 26922. The S/N on the cylinder is weak and looks like 24429? I have not removed the grips to check for a number under those. I can do that for someone that is interested.. Probably will match the barrel or the cylinder.. Not uncommon for these conversions to have mixed S/N's .. As for the condition it is in very good condition still retaining at least 60% dull blue probably applied at the time of the conversion. No pitting or rust.. Has the standard 8” barrel.. The cylinder S/N as I mentioned is weak form the conversion refinishing but the patent markings on both sides of the frame are sharp and crisp. The cylinder has a couple small casting flaws between the locking notches.. Does not effect the function or safety of the gun in any way.. You see these same flaws on the Remington conversion frames a lot when they were machined for the cut outs for loading cartridges.. The screw heads are all very sharp and not burred up from tinkering.. The barrel locks up to the frame rock solid at the hinge and at the rear were the locking screw goes through the barrel and frame. The mechanics are very good and tight with just a little play at lock up. Still very shootable with the proper black powder .44 Colt loads. The cylinder is rock solid fit to the arbor pin with NO wobbles or side to side movement. It chambers the .44 Colt perfectly. Half cock and full cock notches on the hammer are perfect and positive. The spring loaded rebounding firing pin works perfectly.. These used the same style rebounding firing pin as did Colt on their first model Richards conversions. The grips show honest wear dents and dings but no splits or cracks.. Fir perfectly and show an old possible repair on the bottom. { see photo }.. Still has the rammer intact from the percussion days.. The end of the muzzle shows a lot of holster wear { see photo }.. Original front sight. The bore shows rifling along with some pitting from black powder use.. The chambers show minor roughness but no bad pitting or craters. I took a few photos in natural sun light to show the blue a bit better.. This is a fairly rare, hard to find at a reasonable price conversion as I have mentioned.. I do not use the term “rare” if there are 50 of these for sale on the same sight.. All in all a nice ole big and heavy “hog leg” conversion from the 1870's that still has a lot of finish and in very good working order for your collection or shooter at your own risk of course.. Priced very reasonable.. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos.. $25 insured shipping.. SOLD Antique: Yes |
