Taurus Judge Magnum Revolver 6.5” .45 Colt/.410 Bore 2-441061MAG New in Box
Description: The Taurus Judge caused quite a stir when it was originally introduced in 2006. The concept of a large frame revolver that could fire both the .45 Colt and a 410 Bore shotshell must have seemed truly bizarre to most. Although the Judge was preceded by the MIL Thunder 5 revolver, most of the gun buying public have never even heard of that gun, given its low production numbers. The Judge utilizes shallow rifling in the bore to avoid violating the terms of a “short-barreled shotgun” as defined by the National Firearms Act of 1934. While some might complain that the shallow rifling affects accuracy when shooting .45 Long Colt from the Judge, it should be remembered that the Judge was intended specifically for close range self-defense, particularly with the use of .410 shells. It is not meant to be a match grade firearm. The standard Judge has 5 chambers that allow it to shoot not only the .45 Colt and 2.5-inch .410 shotshells, but also the .45 Schofield and the rare .45 Auto-Rim as well. The latter is more of a collector’s item, but the Schofield is still produced by some manufacturers thanks to Cowboy Action Shooting competitions. The Magnum Judge is a version of the standard model with a lengthened cylinder in order to shoot the longer 3-inch .410 shells. These usually hold one or two additional pellets of buckshot (for a max total of 5) compared to the shorter 2.5-inch shells (3 to 4 pellets). The example shown here is the Magnum Judge with 6.5-inch barrel. Much longer than the standard barrel, the 6.5-inch barrel was intended to provide better accuracy with the .45 Colt than the shorter version. Given the shallow rifling used in the barrel of each judge, accuracy with the .45 Colt is fairly good, but not as good as a revolver with deep rifling. This is the tradeoff made in order for the judge to shoot .410 shells as well as the .45 Colt. A revolver dedicated to the .45 Colt would obviously be more accurate but would not be as versatile as the Judge, being unable to shoot .410 shells. The longer barrel goes some way towards alleviating the lower accuracy found on the shorter barrel models. At the end of the day, the Judge is still a fairly close range weapon. This Judge is brand new in the box. There is one spot on the lower right side of the barrel where the black oxide finish did not fully take. As a working gun, this error in the finish doesn’t affect the Judge’s performance.
