Published Tranter No. 1 Sheath-Trigger Revolver in Case
Description: Serial #1457, .230 RF, 2 1/2" octagon barrel with a very good, lightly freckled bore. This is a very nice, seven-shot revolver with all-matching assembly numbers (“74"). The revolver is not retailer marked, but does have the Tranter “football" marking on the left side at the breech. The barrel has about 70-75% of the original blue remaining with gray fading on the balance, and some minor impact marks as well. The cylinder retains traces of the original blue finish on protected areas, but otherwise has an overall smooth, plum-brown patina with silvering along the high edges, and the engraved brass frame has a fairly bright, yellow-ochre patina. The smooth walnut grips are in very good-fine shape with scattered small handling marks and some mild flattening of the points. The lock-up is tight, and the action is fully functional. The revolver is housed in a period, burled walnut English case with dark blue baize lining, original key and turn-screw, and an unmarked, shield-shaped brass escutcheon on the lid. The lid has some damage at the hinge-side corners. This very revolver and case are described and illustrated on pgs. 18 and 19 of “Tranter Cartridge Firearms" by Black, Guerin & Michaud; 2007. This is a handsome, cased, smallbore Tranter that would make a fabulous addition to any collection of Tranter handguns.
