Tranter Model 1868 Revolver in .500 Caliber by Jas. Beattie & Son (Pub
Description: Serial #38411, .500 CF, 4 1/4" octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has minor freckling within the grooves. This is a revolver that retains 40-45% of the original bright blue finish along the lightly engraved barrel, with 20-25% of the original blue remaining on the sides of the frame. The cylinder has a mostly mottled gray patina, and there is crisp scrollwork engraving throughout. There is a clear Tranter "football" marking on the right side, and the gun is retailer marked on the top of the barrel: "JAS. BEATTIE & SON / 205 REGENT ST. LONDON". The checkered walnut grip has numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered about, and the checkering has some mild flattening throughout. The action lock-up is still tight, and the mechanism is fully functional. This is the very gun pictured on pg. 112 and 113 of "Tranter Cartridge Firearms" by Black, Guerin & Michaud; 2007. It is a fine example of big-bore Tranter revolver, and would make a great addition to any collection of British handguns.
