1880's Antique WEBLEY #5 ARMY & NAVY EXPRESS 476/.455/.45 LONG Revolver
Description: Webley #5 Category: Webley Revolvers - Military Revolvers - Non-US Large Bore British Military & Police Revolver Here we present an antique Webley #5 Army & Navy C.S.L Express Multi Caliber Revolver, made circa 1878 in London, England by Webley & Scott. Webley produced their first pistol is 1853 and introduced their first double action in 1867. They are best known for supplying the British Army’s pistols during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The # 5 is one of the later pistols produced by Webley (1878) before they altered their nomenclature from ‘numbers’ to ‘marks’ when the Webley MK I was adopted by the British Army in 1887. The # 5 is often referred to as the Webley new Model or the New Army Express or the # 5 Army & Navy Express. The No.5 was a step forward for Webley improving on their earlier pistols; it proved considerably popular in both the civilian market and with officers purchasing it privately. Like the Colt it loaded through a side gate and had a solid frame. Its stout cartridge, accurate 5 1/2 inch barrel and robust manufacture made it a popular service pistol during the 1880s with its double action allowing the pistol to be fired rapidly. It however, was not adopted by the British Army who instead retained their Adams Revolver until 1880, when the flawed Enfield Revolver was adopted before the top-breaking Webley Mk.1 finally supplanted them in 1887. These would have been at soldiers’ and officers’ sides all over the world during the later-19th and early-20th Centuries in places like Asia, Australia, Africa, Canada, and the British Isles. This period was characterized by the Boer Wars in Africa, unrest in Asia to include the Boxer Rebellion, and growing nationalist movements in India and Ireland. This Webley revolver shares much in common with the American Colt Single Action Army Revolver as a large military revolver; in fact this Webley was essentially a rival to the 1878 Colt DA Army, sharing the same birds head grip. The Webley was fundamentally a better revolver: with a stronger action and a more robust frame. As a military revolver in .455 caliber and 45 Long Colt, it was touted at the time as being able to shoot any and all available 45 caliber ammunition [Including .476 (Enfield Mark III), 455 (Enfield Mark II, 450 (EnfieldMark I), American Service Cartriges (45 Long Colt), 450 Adams, 455 Colt, 450 Colt, 450 Revolver, 450 Short, 450 Corto and 450 Webley}, All of these cartridges shared the same .476 case diameter and the .450 bullet diameter. This fact makes this revolver more rare and desirable as most Webley #5’s were marked .455 CF or .450. It has a loading gate and ejector rod. Its double action set. This one is marked “WEBLEY’S No 5 476” on the right side of the frame and features the; “W&S flying bullet” logo on the left. Above the flying bullet are the marks; ”455 CF & 45 LONG”. The top right and left of the ribbed octagonal barrel and the cylinder chambers (flutes) bear Birmingham proof marks. The top of the frame is marked “ARMY & NAVY C.S.L EXPRESS”. The overall condition is near fine. 50% of the original finish remains. The markings are clear and legible. The checkered hardwood grips are in good if not perfect shape. The bore is fine, bright and shiny with strong rifling. The action is excellent. This is a fantastic and rare example of a British Army revolver from the final decades of the 19th Century! This gun functions and shoots perfectly. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
