British WEBLEY Mark IV .38/200 DOUBLE ACTION Revolver C&R w/1940 HOLSTER
1951-53 mfr. Post-WORLD WAR II Top Break Revolver
Description: British WEBLEY Mark IV .38/200 DOUBLE ACTION Revolver C&R w/1940 HOLSTER 1951-53 mfr. Post-WORLD WAR II Top Break Revolver Here Ancestry Guns present a C&R British Webley & Scott Mark IV Revolver in .38/200 caliber along with a 1940 Dated Holster, made in Birmingham, England circa 1951-53. At the end of the First World War, the British military decided that the .455 caliber gun and cartridge was too large for modern military use, and after numerous tests and extensive trials, that a pistol in .38 caliber firing a 200-grain bullet would be just as effective as the .455 for stopping an enemy. Webley & Scott immediately tendered the .38/200 caliber Webley Mk IV revolver, which was based on their .38 caliber Webley Mk III revolver, designed for the police and civilian markets. To the surprise of Webley, the British government took the design to the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock and had them basically develop the same handgun and it was adopted by the British military. Webley & Scott sued the British Government and were denied, though the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors eventually awarded Webley & Scott £1250 for their work. RSAF Enfield proved unable to manufacture enough No. 2 revolvers to meet the military's wartime demands, and as a result Webley's Mk IV was also widely used within the British Army in World War II. The overall condition is very fine. Original blue finish. The grips are well preserved with little signs of wear. Markings are clear and legible throughout. Numbers matching.
