Description:
Serial #2716, .455 Webley, 6" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome revolver that has retained 95-97% of the factory reapplied blue that has some silvering along the edges and projections, most noticeably along the barrel, as well as some further gray fading on the front portion of the cylinder. Some faint silvering is present around the hinge screw, and on the frame rails as well. The checkered hard rubber grips are in fine shape with minor handling marks, some mild flattening of the points, and a narrow chip at the butt on the left panel. The lock-up is tight, and the revolver functions flawlessly. Notes from Richard Milner relayed to us by noted author and historian Michael Carrick list serial #2716 as having been sold to "Col. E. Gunner. Sold to Messrs D.M. Gunners, Ridgemede Bishops, Waltham, Hants. December 1910." Edward Gunner was born on May 3, 1854, to Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Gunner of Bishops Waltham, Hampshire, and next appears in records when he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on October 29, 1870. He was promoted to Lieutenant on April 29, 1873, assigned to G Battery, 3rd Brigade, Royal Artillery, and served in the Afghan Campaign 1878 & 1880. He was present at Charasia, Kabul, Takht-i-Shash, and Asmai Heights while in Afghanistan, and was awarded the Afghanistan Medal with bars. He was promoted to Captain on September 9, 1882, and was transferred to garrison duty in Britain. Promotion to Major occurred on March 28, 1890; Lt. Colonel on January 31, 1899; and Colonel on January 31, 1903. He retired as a Colonel on June 5, 1907, but returned to service in France during the Great War as a Brigadier General and staff artillery officer, no doubt with this revolver at his side. He was awarded the War Medal and Victory Medal for his wartime service and passed away on February 20, 1920 at the age of 65.
