Webley Mk. V Service Revolver Named to Capt. East Surry Regiment
Description: Serial #158865, .45 ACP/.45 Auto Rim, 6" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a Land Service Pattern revolver (6" barrel with removable front sight) that retains traces of the original blue finish on protected areas, and a mottled gray-brown patina with patches of mild pinprick pitting on the balance of the metal. The revolver was converted to .45 ACP at some point after arriving in the United States. All markings are crisp, including the double arrow deaccession stamp on the right side of the barrel lug, and the checkered horn grips are in very good shape with some minor flattening of the points, light surface scratches, and a few small chips at the butt on the right panel. The backstrap is engraved in crisp block letters: “M.O. SHERIDAN 4TH EAST SURREY REGT". The lock-up is still quite tight, and the mechanism functions flawlessly. The revolver is housed in a period, private purchase brown leather holster that has numerous small surface scuffs and blemishes, but is still intact and fully serviceable. Maurice Overing Sheridan was born on November 9, 1885, and educated at Harrow. He joined a Public School Battalion after the outbreak of WW1, and was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on June 1, 1915, but the appointment was cancelled, and he was subsequently given a probationary commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. He served in France as a member of the 1st Battalion, 95th Brigade, 5th Division, and was promoted to Temporary Lieutenant, Royal Irish Regiment, in February of 1917. In July he was promoted to Captain, and remained seconded. He remained in the Army following the War as part of the Special Reserve of Officers, Infantry, and relinquished his commission on April 1, 1920, retaining the permanent rank of Lieutenant. Following his military career, Sheridan lived in Exeter, and held a seat on the London Stock Exchange. He passed away in March of 1976. This is a very nice Mk. V Webley, identified to a WW1 British officer, and is in a scarce configuration. It would make a splendid addition to any collection of WW1 British weapons.
