Webley WG Model 1892 Revolver Belonging To Maj. Rhodesian Constabulary
Description: Serial #4308, .476, 6" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome revolver that retains 80-85% of the original blue finish, with the balance faded to a mellow plum-brown patina, and some silvering along the high edges as well. The “church steeple"-fluted cylinder is serial numbered to the gun (308), and the frame and barrel have matching assembly numbers (3433). The topstrap has Webley “'WG' ARMY MODEL 1892" marking with the Webley & Scott “Winged Bullet" on the lower left side of the frame, and the “ARMY & NAVY CSL" retailer marking along the barrel rib. The walnut grips are in fine condition with some scattered small scratches and blemishes, and are also assembly numbered to the gun on the interior. The barrel lock-up is tight, with merely a hint of lateral play when closed, and the mechanism functions flawlessly. Army & Navy CSL records list this revolver as having been sold on December 12, 1892 to “Mainwaring Esq". Reginald Mainwaring was born in 1870 and was the third son of Gen. W.G. Mainwaring, CIE, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant of the 3rd (King’s Own) Hussars in January of 1892. He was seconded for service as a Pioneer Officer with the Bulawayo Field Force in what eventually become Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. He served as Treasurer to the Sanitary Board supervising road construction and labor recruitment and also as a Troop Commander of the BFF upon receiving a promotion to Captain. Upon the outbreak of the Boer War he joined the Southern Rhodesia Volunteers, earning the “Rhodesia" and “Relief of Mafeking" bars as a Major in the Commander-in-Chief’s Bodyguard from November 21, 1900 to May 19, 1901. The following year the Bulawayo Field Force was amalgamated with the Mashonaland Constabulary to form the Southern Rhodesia Constabulary, headquartered in Salisbury (Harare). He returned to Britain between 1905 and 1906, but passed away in Edinburgh, Scotland on April 10, 1906 at the age of 36. This is a handsome WG, with Rhodesian and Boer War history, and is in fine condition overall.
