SCARCE Navy-Marked and Inspected Whitney Navy 36 Cal Percussion Revolver Civil War
Description: Whitney Navy revolver, 2nd Model, 4th type, 36 caliber percussion, 6-shot cylinder, 7.75" octagon barrel, walnut grips, single action, serial number 23273, made early 1864 by the Whitney Arms Company in New Haven, CT. This is an extremely scarce Navy inspected and issued version - small anchor on top of barrel by breech, initials "FCW" on left side of frame for Frank C. Warner, who was a civilian employed by the Washington Navy Yard to inspect the government-purchased Whitneys, capital "E" on the inside of the right grip, matching rack number "17" appearing on the face of the cylinder/right side of the loading lever/right side of the grip/and underside of the barrel. Serial number 23273 appears on the bottom of the barrel, both sections of the loading rod, the rear of the cylinder, inside both grips, right side of frame under brass trigger guard and on the underside of the trigger guard. Also, the letters "O" and "E" appear on the left side of the frame under trigger guard and on the underside of the trigger guard. Right side of grip has the number "4" and back portion of the loading rod has an "O". 100% matching and original. Of all the Whitney Navys, only 900 of them were sent to Frank Warner for inspection. With the estimated survival rate of firearms of this vintage at 5 to 10%, about 45 to 90 of these would be existing today. CONDITION: All metal surfaces have turned a mix of light and dark brown. Brass trigger guard is uncleaned and retains a darker mustard color with traces of the tarnished silver plate intact. No cylinder scene remains but all 6 original nipples are present and completely intact. Walnut grips show nicks and dings with a small sliver missing back right at bottom, otherwise very sound with no refinishing seen. Very strong hammer spring and positive clicks to action. Bore is good with distinct, consistent rifling and of course the typical scattered black powder oxidation but no rings or bulges. Grades NRA Antique Very Good and a must have in your Civil War firearms collection. TERMS: No international sales. Antique so it can ship directly to your delivery address of choice. Free shipping by USPS Priority Mail with tracking. Payment by bank check, money order or personal check. All major credit cards accepted with 4% convenience fee added. Sold as a collectible only; a competent gunsmith should check it over before firing it.
