CustomPre-64 22 Hornet Barreled Action
Description: If you are a model 70 admirer,a 22 Hornet fan, or a light weight pack rifle afficionato, but very particular about the wood on your custom project, please consider this very high end customized bolt action rifle project. I purchased this Hornet action mid 90' from a very well known older metalsmith. He was thinning his projects and this one had to go. He represented it well and actually sent along a few extra parts. It went into my drawer probably quicker than he relented and pull it out to sell to me. The action is a parts gun, the two unsatisfactory things about it to me at time were it had an altered bolt from a Winchester Model 54 Hornet and some " unproffesional" had drilled some misaligned screw holes and two of them had been either stripped or had taps broken off while tapping. These old 70's are tuff. Some years later I saw that James Wisner had new from scratch pre-64 Hornet bolt available. Bought it and I got excited about the Hornet again. This is what this Hornet barreled action project includes: 1 receiver, number 59499 I new/old Wisner manufactured Hornet bolt body ( Fits so nice and snug ) I new/old Wisner 3 position safety All the miscelaneous parts in the accompaning photos I Krieger rifle blank, 1-14 twist ( originally a #3 contour ?) Chromoly steel Weight of the barreled action less less bottom metal and scope bases, rings etc. is 4.3 bls. Work that has been done: The interesting scope mount hole design has been straightened up but custom bases with the right hole spacing and size will have to be made ( There are two machined blanks included for front and rear ) Reciever sight holes front right and left receiver side have been welded up. Rear tang screw hole has been blinded and an added welding for a spike on the tang. The reciever was set up between a center and index head on the mill, dilled in and pretty much the entire reciever was machined down to reduce weight below the wood including the recoil lug and above the wood on the left side the wall was set in similar to a G33/40 but the cut goes just down to the top wood line ( no awkward cut out in the wood line ) Some parts of the receiver have been skimmed over with a serface grinder. THE BOLT: somewhere along the way an excellent client came on board and wanted a very different bolt handle, scultpured yes, but that sculpturing had to include grip like checkering, but NO CHECKERING and very artistic to go along with a heavily engraved, lightweight rifle. So this is it. Took many hours to figure out something interesting. And beleive me it has grip. He loved it. Stating " it's wild man, wild". Hope you do too. This project outlived the client unfortunately so back into the safe until now. I lost count of the cost when it sped past $5000. The client had no concern of cost. The Krieger blank was machined myself. Not a particularly difficult task but it does take time and this lightweight barrel took extra time. Not chatter allowed! it measures 23.6 inches in length. 1.100 at the receivers, .785 approx inch from receivers face and .490 at muzzel. About a .013 taper per inch. It's been threaded, chambered, headspaced, extactor cut in and fit to snap over the rim on closing even when singly loading cartridges. Things to do: I have never really seen one of the original Pre-64 Hornets that fed all that well. I know I'm going to get flak so please show me your video of an original 70 Hornet feeding a complete box of ammo ( 50 ) slow , fast, odd angles like used in everyday life. My plan was to just have a nice single shot rifle. Nice guard bow with oval front action screw escutcheon maybe heel and tow plates, no cap, just a nice wavy pistolgrip. Whats your's? I'm offering this project for sale at $2800. ( approx. half of the amount invested ) PRICE REDUCED......$2500 !!! Thank you for your time, Steve Heilmann SOLD Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 70 Barrel Length: 23.6 inches Condition: excellent Metal Condition: in progress Wood Condition: no wood Action: pre-64 model 70 Stock: none |
