Jerry Fisher / Eric Gold, Ultimate Grade, Take Down 99 Savage, Caliber 250-3000
Description: JERRY FISHER'S LAST RIFLE PRICE REDUCED ! Sadly, this fabulous 99 Savage takedown in Cal.250-3000 is the last rifle Jerry Fisher built . The engraving is by another legend, Eric Gold.(now retired) Though Jerry had many more projects in mind, and his wife Celeste and many others of us expected Jerry to be at his bench at 100, cancer had other plans. Incredibly, Jerry finished this rifle at 90 years of age. I asked Jerry why a 99. His answer was that he had done several when he was just getting started, but never got to do one "just the way he wanted it". Those of you not familiar with the custom rifle trade should know that Jerry Fisher was "The Man ". Jerry was, and is a Legendary figure in the custom stockmaking/gunmaking trade since the 1950's. Jerry mentored hundreds of struggling stockmakers and gunmakers for decades. Jerry's work is admired and sought out world wide. Jerry's career was pushing the 70 year mark but he was not a prolific builder, admitting to me that he "was not the fastest mechanic around". ( mechanic was a word Jerry used sometimes to identify a gun builder ) Fans of Fisher's work would wait years for their rifles, sometimes shocked by the price, but never dissapointed in the execution of the work, his eye for proportions, detail and functionality. Jerry was quite an accomplished outdoorsman and wanted his rifles to be used and enjoyed. This "one off" 99 Savage also includes the engraving of another master, Eric Gold. Jerry helped jump start the careers of many top engravers and so it is with Eric Gold. While Eric is alive and well, Eric has announced this is also his last engraving project. Possibly Eric's heart is just not in the work after losing his friend of 40 years. This rifle is truly the end of an era. Hopefully the photos will help tell the story of this rifle, a classic and so identifiable American lever rifle. Two legends at the top of their game. Jerry designed, built the tooling, machined and fit the one of a kind rear tang peep sight. The fit and finish is as good as it gets. The time Jerry spent on this sight is as much time as many craftsmen would spend building an entire custom rifle. Of course Jerry would spend many hours detailing, stoning and polishing all the metal surfaces of this 99 barreled action. The gunstock material is truly an exhibition grade of California English feather crotch walnut. Jerry's lifetime of experience helped him design and craft the stock on this 99, just the way he wanted it, finishing it out with a finely hand rubbed oil finish and 24 lines per inch checkering. The length of pull is 13 1/2 inches. I cannot tell you the exact amount of time that Eric Gold spent on this rifle but I think it would be safe to say "hundreds of hours ". Eric's work has appeared in too many publications to list . His work has been sought out by many but limited to a few. He is a truly world renowned artist and it of course shows in his design, layout and execution on this rifle. The outdoor scene on the bottom of the receiver depicts Jerry's love of the outdoors. This rifle appeared on the cover of Gunmaker ( the Journal of Custom Gunmaking ) Winter issue #177 Please don't hesitate to contact me for more details regarding this Fabulous Fisher and Gold 99 Savage !
