Made at the Armory at Saarn

Here we present an antique Prussian Saarn Arsenal Model 1809/31 Percussion Conversion Musket, manufactured circa 1830 at the Prussian armory at Saarn. This musket was the standard infantry weapon of the Royal Prussian Army from the 18th century until the military reforms of the 1840s. Four models were produced at Potsdam, Saarn, and Neyse, including the Model 1723, the Model 1740, the Model 1809, as is this one, and the Model 1831.

This Model 1809 was originally made in the flintlock format, with production after 1831 changing the name to the Model 1809/31 and shifting to the more modern and reliable percussion firing system. It was likely converted over to percussion shortly after it was produced in 1830. This musket would have been used in Prussian conflicts during the 1840s and 50s, including the Egyptian-Ottoman War, the Greater Poland Uprising, the Revolutions of 1848, and the First Schleswig War, before being sold to the United States government in the first years of the American Civil War. Though thoroughly obsolete, both the Union and the Confederacy were desperate for small arms as the South had little capability to make their own and the North had to scramble to ramp up their own production.

This example is marked “FW” above “Saarn”. The “FW” are the initials that stand for Prussian King Fredrich Wilhelm III, who reigned from 1797 to 1840.

The overall condition is good+. Patina throughout. The right side of the breech has some flash pitting to the metal and the wood. The nipple is fused. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth with a patina. The stock remains solid despite much use.
