Antique OHIO LONG RIFLE by TEAFF Engraved Half Stock BACK ACTION Percussion
American Long Rifle with M.M. Maslin Lock!
Description: Antique OHIO LONG RIFLE by TEAFF Engraved Half Stock BACK ACTION Percussion American Long Rifle with M.M. Maslin Lock! Here we present an Antique James Teaff Half Stock Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Steubenville, Ohio. James Teaff was an active gunmaker in Jefferson County, Ohio circa 1816 to 1856. This one is very attractive with its lavish patch box and many German silver adornments. It also has a brass rib for the ramrod underneath the barrel as well as brass butt plate, trigger guard, and fore end cap. There is a primitive American eagle engraved in the German silver oval on the left side of the stock, where the cheek rest is, and the maker’s mark is large on the top flat of the rifle’s octagonal portion of the barrel. Double set triggers. Its stout part round, part octagonal barrel is in .45 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the ‘Kentucky rifle’, was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle: “From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination. Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.” The overall condition is fine. The action is strong. The bore is in nice shape. “J. TEAFF” can be clearly read a top the barrel. “M.M. Maslin” is engraved on the lock along with light floral engravings. This is a fantastic piece of history, and one that would look great in a place of honor in your home. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 26-3/4 inches. Caliber: .45 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
