Description: The Peabody Model 1867 represents one of the most successful early breech-loading military rifles, designed by Henry Peabody and manufactured by the Providence Tool Company. Switzerland ordered 15,000 of these rifles as part of their military modernization program, making this one of the most significant international contracts for American-made military firearms of the era.
This scarce example bears authentic Swiss military markings including the distinctive "M" in oval and Swiss cross cartouches, with additional Swiss cartouches on the right side of the butt stock. Features 33" round barrel with full length stock, wiping rod, and two retaining bands typical of the Swiss contract specifications. Very good condition with exterior having toned to an attractive plum patina while retaining an excellent bore and mechanically fine function. A very scarce rifle in the United States and an important piece of both American manufacturing and Swiss military history.
