About 1,500 to 2,000 Allen drop breech rimfire rifles were made circa 1860 to 1870s. The overall length is approx. 43.5"". The 26"" octagon 38 rimfire barrel has a good bore with strong rifling and some erosion toward the muzzle. The front and rear sights are present with the rear being a two-leaf flip-up with the long leaf having a sliding adjustment. The barrel has a smooth even brown patina. With the exception of the serial number under the forearm, there are no barrel markings. The receiver is a smooth gray/brown. It is marked on the top FOREHAND & WADSWORTH/WORCESTER. MASS./PATENTED SEPT. 18. 1860. This marking is not unusual on these guns. They were also marked Ethan Allen & Co. and Allen & Wheelock. This gun features the later tapered square-headed screw which can be removed to release the barrel from the receiver. The stocks are good with the buttstock having an old repair at the wrist and a chip at the upper right tang intersection with the receiver and another smaller chip at the right side of the tang. The stock presents better than it describes. The action functions correctly. This Allen drop breech takedown rimfire rifle is key to any Allen long gun collection.
