Antique Colt Lightning saddle ring carbine in .44/40 caliber
Description: Up at today is a well preserved Colt lightning carbine in the saddle ring configuration. It was generated in the Colt fatory in 1893 according to the serial numbers and its design was interestingly not introduced by John Browning but rather by a man named of Dr. William Elliot. Colt bought his design in 1883 and the gun came out at that time in an effort to compete with Winchester's lever action 92 rifles which were very hot sellers at the time. The rifle was slide actioned and would slam fire if the operator held the trigger back and just pumped the action. From the speed point of view no doubt this rifle would beat Winchester's lever gun. Unfortunately for Colt the rifle or carbine version of this pump action weapon just didn't catch on and so it's production ceased in 1894 with a total production of just under 90,000 guns. I have several of these rifles and with significant experience with both Winchester's lever action 92 and the Colt lightning rifle I prefer the Colt for handling, accuracy and speed. The gun up now at is an excellent well preserved example of the saddle ring carbine version of the lightning. It's action is smooth with both hand loaded and factory ammunition. The barrel is mint and it will pattern 5 shots from a rest at 50 yards right at 1 1/2 inches with old man eyes. It would most likely do a bit better in a younger shooter's hands. The finish is at least 90 percent of the original and everything on the rifle is untouched from the day of its production except for of course gentle handling throughout its 130 plus year existence. The wood both fore and aft is in excellent shape and the front and barrel ladder sights function well and show no signs of any abuse. The lightning rifle was made in three basic frame sizes. Small, medium and large with the middle range one being offered in three pistol calibers. The most popular one was the .44/40 which is the one offered here. The 38/40 and 32/20 fell a little bit behind the .44 caliber gun in popularity but never the less were made in significant numbers. The price placed on these rifles depends greatly on the condition and originality. This one would certainly be considered in the top 5 percent of the original ones available and so the price. Take a look at the photos and see if you don't agree. Thanks so much for taking a look and I wish you the best of all things during the coming year.
