Marlin short barrel lever action rifle in the 44/40 caliber
Description:
Up for your review today is an interesting Marlin lever gun with a now required ATF letter indicating it has a 15 inch barrel. It is in excellent condition considering it was born around 1908 to 1910 during a time when ATF authorization was not required for these short barreled guns. Its actual date of manufacture is a bit hard to determine because of the loss of company data during some of the early part of the 20th century. Records are pretty good up until 1906 but between then and around 1917 or so when an alphabetical letter began to be present as a prefix to the serial numbers accurate information is hard to come by. The rifles produced in 1906 have serial numbers around 350 thousand and this rifle has a serial number in the neighborhood of 402 thousand which would put its date of manufacture approximately as stated above. Most of these guns were used in the field by both hunters and trappers who needed an easy carry weapon when they traveled their trap lines and so most today show hard use. This one seems to be in much better condition than the average one for sure and it was produced in smaller quanties than many of the carbines during that period in time due to its very short barrel. Much of the finish on the wood, barrel, and magazine tube as well as the frame remains in good condition. The bore is bright and shinny with no evidence of corrosion or discoloration of any sort. The action is smooth and tight. The screws show little evidence of over use and all of the incsriptions are distinct. I have never fired the gun but it should shoot well if someone takes the time to test its accuracy. I think my pictures will support this commentary regarding the gun's condition. Will answer questions according to the need. Thanks much for taking a look at this high condition very rare little rifle. Jack
