Spencer Sporting Rifle with J Harder (Lock Haven, PA) Stamped Barrel
ANTIQUE .56-46 Rimfire
Description: Here we have a lever action, tubular fed Spencer repeater. Its serial number is 32192. Based on evidence that we see, we feel that this rifle started as a carbine, then was rebarreled and rechambered as a bottleneck rimfire (.56-46). The barrel is stamped " J. HARDER LOCK HAVEN PA". The muzzle to chamber length is 31 5/8 inches. The bore has nice rifling throughout. As it is a blackpowder cartridge rifle we do see some evidence of pitting. The rifle's wood is in very good condition. The walnut stock is nice and solid. It has has handling marks but no major gouges. There is a grain separation by the forend cap approximately 1 3/4" with no wood loss. This Spencer's metal is in very good condition with an overall covering of brown patina. The rifle's weight is 11 pounds, 2 ounces. Please see pictures for details. According to Cartridges of the World (Barnes, 2006, p. 486): "This post-Civil War sporting cartridge was introduced by Spencer in 1866 for his repeating small carbine and sporting rifle. It ws also listed as the No.46 or 46/100 caliber. Spencer lever action sporting arms were manufactured from 1866 until the firm failed in 1868-69. Winchester bought up the surplus guns and Spencer patents, but did not manufacture those rifles. However, the company sold off surplus rifles through its agents from 1869 to 1872. The cartridge has been obsolete since before World War I, but was cataloged until 1919... The 56-46 Spencer is actually a 44-caliber, bottlenecked cartridge. It was considerably more powerful than the 44-40 WCF. A 32-- to 330-grain bullet and 45 grains of blackpowder was the standard load. It was a fairly good short-range deer cartridge." Please see pictures for details. All used firearms should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith prior to firing. All items are sold as photographed unless other arrangements are made. We accept USPS Money Order, cashier’s check, or credit card for immediate shipping. Please note credit card sales are subject to an additional 3% fee. Shipping & Handling ($70):
