SWISS Contract PEABODY Rifle by PROVIDENCE TOOL
Description: SWISS Contract PEABODY Rifle by PROVIDENCE TOOL Rugged Breech-Loading Military Rifle Circa 1867 Here we present an antique Peabody Model 1867 Swiss Contract Rifle, made by the Providence Tool Company in Providence, Rhode Island circa 1867. Henry Peabody developed this sturdy, single-shot, breechloading rifle during the American Civil War and it compared very favorably against the competition. It might have been adopted by the US military had the conflict not ended when it did. Instead, the federal government decided to adopt the Allin Trapdoor Conversion of the ubiquitous Model 1861 Muskets that were in surplus after the war. Several states, such as Massachusetts and Connecticut, purchased these rifles for their militias. This rifle was one of about 15,000 made for the Swiss contract that was to hold the military over until production of the Vetterli rifle gained momentum. These were issued to engineers and sharpshooters. It is chambered in the .41 Swiss cartridge unlike many that were converted for the .45-70 GOVT cartridge. It features a very neat rear sight that is capable of fine elevation adjustments. There are sling swivels on this model, which is correct for a rifle that wasn’t arsenal refurbished. This specimen has a lock marked with “PEABODY PAT./JULY 22 1862/MAN’F’D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I.” Single letter inspection marks are found throughout: the capital letter “E” and a Star “M” inside a small oval. The “M” markings is also seen on the side of the butt stock. The overall condition is near fine. The blue on the barrel is 55%. The case colors on the receiver remain vibrant. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is smooth and solid. The bore is excellent, bright and sharp. The action is also excellent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33 inches. Caliber: .41 Swiss (10.4x38mm) Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1875 #8101 SOLD Antique: Yes |
