Converted British Smoothbore Doglock Musket
Description: Converted British smoothbore doglock musket. Caliber unknown. 29” barrel (believed to have been cut down.) Barrel is marked London with 2 proof marks featuring a crown over an arrow or chevron pointing downwards. Case hardened or blued lock plate with brass hardware including ramrod guides, trigger guard, and buttplate featuring floral engraving and an acorn motif. Walnut stocks. Manufactured 1700-1730. Condition The hammer and lock on the musket is mechanically functional. It cocks and holds. Cosmetically the musket is in fair condition. The lock has been uniquely converted from doglock/flintlock to percussion during period of use. There is a fair amount of pitting on the barrel near the vent screw from corrosive black powder and is consistent with age. The barrel appears to have been cut down. The stock has hairline cracks in areas around the lock plate and barrel including a sizable chip near the hammer. There is also a crack forming on the grip of the stock behind the trigger guard. The stock shows signs of period use (dings, nicks, and dents.) The fore end of the stock has split and is held together with a sinew wrap. Enhancements The musket has been “enhanced” with the addition of steel tacks in a linear pattern – found on the right-hand side of the stock. These enhancements are similar 18th and 19th c. by Native Americans. We are unable to verify whether the tacks are period adornments or later enhancements. The cordage binding the forestock together is sinew - also used by the Native Americans however, we cannot verify the period in which this was added either.
