Revolutionary War American Captured Pattern 1748 Long Land First Model Brown Bess Flintlock Musket 46" Bbl RARE
SALE PENDING
Description: Rare & Important Revolutionary War American Captured/Issued Pattern 1748 Long Land (First Model) British “Brown Bess” Flintlock Musket by Edward Jordan, .77 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa 1748/1749. This is an extremely rare original French & Indian War era First Model Brown Bess that was subsequently used by patriot forces during the American Revolution. The Royal Crown and “GR” cipher of King George III on the lock have been deliberately defaced and ground off indicating rebellious American ownership during the War for Independence. It may have been captured in battle however being that this was an older model by the time the “shot heard ‘round the world” was fired in 1775 it is more likely that the gun was already in colonial hands having been previously supplied to provincial troops during the French & Indian War and retained by a town militia unit. Original full length 46" barrel shows good clear King’s proof and viewer's marks along with barrel supplier's initials. Sighting notch cut on top of the breech in typical American fashion with original bayonet lug slightly filed. Early curved “banana” style lock is in it's original flintlock form and the touch hole has not been altered. Original frizzen, feather spring, and pan with probable American made period replacement cock. Cock screw and forward lock bolt are modern. Lock plate is marked at the tail “IORDAN / 1747” ("4" is very faint and last number likely “7”). Overall the metal has a nice smooth plum/brown patina. The stock shows heavy wear and use throughout with owner's initials and markings scratched into the sides of the butt and a hole drilled through possibly for a rope sling or lanyard of some kind. Large beavertail carving around the barrel tang with one old kill notch on top of the comb. There is a diagonal splice behind the second ramrod pipe and the remaining 23" of the forearm is an old restoration. Old repaired crack through the wrist with minor loss around the tail of the lock. Original brass buttplate, convex sideplate, wrist escutcheon, triggerguard, entry pipe, and second pipe. Triggerguard has an old repaired break and the forward portion ahead of the bow is an old replacement. The third pipe, Pattern 1756 style long forward pipe, nosecap, and brass tipped wood rammer are 20th century replacements. Correct style reproduction sling swivels. The action cocks and functions very nicely. Frizzen securely snaps shut and springs forward properly. In spite of having some restoration over the years this gun has most importantly survived without having ever been cut down or converted to percussion as so many were. It is VERY difficult to find any First Model Brown Bess with it's original full length barrel and unaltered original lock. A wonderful piece of history with a direct American patriot association that was witness to the founding of the United States.
