"Spanish/ Italian Percussion Fowler .65 caliber (AL4776)
Description: "NSN, circa early 19th century, .65 caliber, 36"" round barrel. Spanish/ Italian Percussion fowler. The lock is signed “Francesco Nute Cortona" (Tuscany). The barrel is signed “Juan Francisco de Yrusta/ Fabricado de Eibar (Spain)" and dated on barrel “Ano de 1816". This very fine fowler is engraved, chiseled, on gold ground. The gun is finely checkered and accented with silver tacks. The mounts are silver and expertly engraved with scroll and floral motifs. The stock is well carved with an image of a bearded Neoclassical figure behind the trigger guard tang at the wrist. The barrel is gold inlaid and is octagonal that transitions to round, with a chiseled ring with gold ground. The lock is beautifully engraved and the cock is of a dog’s head at the percussion nipple. The silver side plate is in the form of a wolf’s head with the scrolls giving the appearance of animal fur. This is an elegant fowler made for someone of importance, such as royalty or of high status. Unusual collaboration of Jaun Francisco de Yrusta and Francisco Nute .
