The percussion Swiss Model 1851 Feldstutzer rifle, also called the Eidgenossischer Stutzer 1851 (Federal Carbine 1851), was the first rifle to be introduced after the Federal Constitution of 1848 transferred armament responsibility from the Cantons to the Federal State. This was the first military rifle in Europe to depart from the 18mm caliber (71 caliber) for the smaller 10.4mm caliber bore (41 caliber). This change enabled the soldier to carry twice as much ammunition. The Model 1851 Feldstutzer rifle was issued to the sharpshooters of all Cantons. Like all Stutzers, it is equipped with double set triggers. In total, 6400 Model 1851 rifles were manufactured with many later being altered to the Milbank-Amsler system. The overall length is approx. 51"". The 33.25"" octagon to round barrel has a fine bore which has frosting in the grooves. The rifle weighs approx. 10 pounds. The rear sight is adjustable from 200 to 1000 paces. It is also equipped with a massive peep sight. The barrel is bright with light spottting. It is marked in gold inlay J. SCHMID IN ONSTMETTINGEN. . The barrel is equipped with a bayonet lug. The lock is bright with light staining and is ummarked. The hammer, trigger guard, Stutzen butt plate, and ramrod housing are mostly brigh with some brown mixed int. The ramrod and top swivel are present with the bottom swivel that screws into the stock being absent. The stock is very good with moderate wear, no cracks or chips, and an area on the upper tight butt that appears to have been too near a flame. The double set trigger action functtions correctly.
