Springfield Armory manufactured 47,115 Model 1855 58 caliber percussion rifle muskets between 1857 and 1861 with Harpers Ferry Armory manufacturing an additional 12,158. Many were lost in the early months of the Civil War. This rifle musket's 40"" round barrel has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling. The barrel is marked V over P over eagle at the breech with 1858 on the top flat. It is correctly equipped with the long range rear sight. All the metal is bright with a few areas of very light spotting. The lock is marked U.S. over SPRINGFIELD at the front and 1858 at the tail. The Maynard tape primer door has a beautifully struck eagle. The stock is very good with no cracks or chips, some moderate dents on the right side of the butt stock, the expected issue dents and dings, and two visible cartouches on the left flat. The swivels and ramrod are present. The action, including the Maynard tape primer mechanism, functions correctly. This much better than average Springfield Model 1855 rifle musket is a must for any Civil War collection.
