Guns International #: 102136920
Seller's Inventory #: AL5272
A most unusual piece needing further research. The overall length is about 37 3/4"". The 22"" round cut off barrel is approximately .54 caliber with a poor bore. All metal has a dark brown patina. The barrel has light pitting, with moderate pitting at the bolster area. The lock is brown with very light pinprick pitting. The brass furniture is fine with a nice even patina. The stock is fair with crude repairs on both sides of the action and a crudely shortened forend. The action functions correctly. This gun appears to be made up of unmarked Model 1841 Mississippi rifle parts. The trigger guard, patchbox, buttplate tang and sideplates are engraved, mostly with scrolls. The bottom of the forend has a 1 5/8"" five point star with a Masonic eye in the center. The left butt has an approximately 3 1/4"" x 4 1/4"" Angel Gabriel plaque. Engraved on the portion adjacent to the horn is ""Capt Henry Kutzemeyer/Capt John J Reinecke/ Capt Chs G Cristman."" The tail is engraved ""Capt John H Hoffman Presented This."" This interesting rifle is definitely worthy of further research. There's got to be a story here!
