Civil War Antique U.S., D. Nippes, Mill Creek, Pa. Model 1840, .69 caliber Rifled Musket, Very Rare
Description: Rare and seldom seen U.S. Model 1840 rifled musket built by Daniel S. Nippes, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is estimated only 5,600 were made beginning in 1842. The barrel is a full-length 42 inches. The conversion of this rifle was 1847, early enough to have been used in the Mexican-American War then again in the Civil War. The wood is in outstanding condition for a musket this age. The wood to metal fit is near perfect. The barrel and all the armed furniture has turned a beautiful plum. Only fine pin-pricking rust is present around the nipple and the conversion area. The original cartouche is still present on the flat of the stock opposite the lock plate. The Mill Creek, Pa. 1847 remains very strong on the lock. The D. Nippes on the lock was stamped lightly but is still present. It has the original barrel bands and sling swivels as well as the original ramrod. The front sight is affixed to the front band. Since this gun was very possibly used in the Mexican-American War, it seems logical that it was also used in the Civil War by the Texas Infantry. This American-made musket would be a great addition to any Civil War collection. A period bayonet is also included. The bayonet lug was either broken off or removed at some time. I work in a gun shop and the rifle will be shipped from the shop UPS. Fully insured with tracking. $35 shipping. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .69 Manufacturer: D.
