French rifled musket model 1842T
Description: French fusil model 1842 T Infantry of the line rifle.serial number I 002 in excellent condition. The bore is in excellent condition with very strong rifling (french pattern 1857 rifling, progressive depth with 4 lands and grooves) and shoots very accurately. metal and wood are in very good condition too. The action is strong and works perfectly. no cracks, no heavy wear or other problems. everything is in superb condition. This particular rifle has the serial number I 002 and has been made in 1843. a very early example from the mutzig arsenal (which after Saint Ettienne, Tulle and Chattelrault was the last arsenal to tool up for the production of the 1842). initially produced as a smoothbore but later (like most french muskets) it was upgraded with 1857 pattern rifling ( on this example that was done in 1862 by the mutzig arsenal as can be seen on the second cartouche on the butstock) by order of the imperial French government. Engraved in the wood on the bottom just behind the metal grip we can see the number '52'. this would make it the property of the '52 eme regiment d'infantrie de ligne' at some point in its life. the 52nd was part of the french army in Crimea where it saw combat in all the major battles that the french army took part in (except for the battle at Inkerman where the french did help the british but the 52nd was not part of this action). later during the war of 1859 the 52nd was also present at the battle of Magenta. here it was one of the first units to be thrown into action against the Austrians. The regiment sustained heavy losses. as a result it was withdrawn from the theatre and thus it didn't partake in the battle of Solferino. wether this rifle would have been a part of any of this is of course pure speculation. The rifle itself has a caliber of 18mm and would have fired a french Minie bullet either of model 1857 or 1862 depending on the timeframe ( for dimension and moulds feel free to ask i can set you up with one). With an overal length of 150cm the rifle is very long even compared to other rifles of the age outside of France. The sight is of very simple construction with just a fixed rear sight behind the breech of the barrel. this sight is zeroed to 200m with the service charge. though by utilising certain sighting techniques the French did drill ways to acquire an accurate (ish) sight picture for 100m, 200m, 300m, 400m and finally 600m with this sight (for more detailed explanations about this don't hesitate to ask). During the American civil war these rifles would have been imported by both the union and confederate armies. With ~60 thousand of these rifles going to the union armies and half of that to the confederates. used almost exclusively in the western theatres. the very large model 1862 17.2mm single groove minié balls fired by these rifles do still pop up at battlefields such as shiloh and stones river. though due to its proprietary ammunition, crude sight etc. it was considered a weapon of the second class (together with rifles such as the mississippi). Here you have a unique opportunity to buy an exceptionally rare civil war era firearm. hard to find in europe and practically impossible in the USA. This gun will give you great performance on the range and it will be a proud part of your collection for years to come.
