HANDSOME Antique PENNSYLVANIA Full-Stock LONG RIFLE
Description: HANDSOME Antique PENNSYLVANIA Full-Stock LONG RIFLE Made Circa the Mid 1800s Here we present an antique Pennsylvania Full-Stock Long Rifle, made circa the 1840s. The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the ‘Kentucky rifle’, was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle: “From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination. Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.” This rifle was likely made in the Pennsylvania area. This rifle is well made and handsome, having a brass patch and cap box. The engraving on the face of the lock features pheasants. The hammer is also engraved. The lock is marked “GOULCHER”. George Goulcher manufactured precision percussion locks in the early- to mid-1800s out of New York City. Goulcher made a wide range of components for the arms market that could be used by gunsmiths unable to produce their own parts. The octagon barrel is .40 caliber. Sights are rifle type. This rifle would have been used to put food on the table and protect the homestead. The overall condition is very good. The iron is dark with age. The markings are legible. The maple stock is in great shape. The bore is dark with strong rifling. The action is strong. Here is a real looker for your collection! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 37-3/4 inches. Caliber: .40 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
