Interesting US Model 1841 "Mississippi" Rifle by Harper’s Ferry with Indian Decorations
Description:
NSN, .54 Caliber, 33" barrel with a fair, darkly freckled bore. This rifle has an 1851-dated lock with clear "(eagle) / US" ahead of the hammer, and "HARPER’S / FERRY / 1851" behind. The barrel was never modified for a bayonet, and has an overall plum-brown patina with light pitting and surface oxidation at the breech, and some mottled gray-brown on the lockplate. The walnut stock has been well-used with numerous handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout. Additionally, there are several cracks and chips opposite the lock, behind the nipple bolster, as well as along the forend and edges of the ramrod channel. Brass tack decorations are present, mostly on the buttstock, but around the lock and a few on the forend as well. The brass furniture has some engraved decorative markings along the borders of the nosecap and barrel band (the retaining springs for both are broken and they are not currently secured). Additionally, the sling swivels have been removed, and the ramrod is no longer present. This is a well-used "Mississippi Rifle" with some period plains decorations, and would make a visually interesting addition to any collection. Antique;
