RARE 1863 Confederate Fayetteville Armory Type III Civil War Rifled Musket .58 Cal Percussion
Description: To see more Colts, Winchesters, Knives, Nautical, and other quality antiques, visit Jeremiah Johnson Trading at JeremiahJohnsonTrading ~Trades and offers are always considered~ VERY RARE Civil War Confederate M1863 Fayetteville Armory Type III Musket, .58 cal, mfg. 1863. This musket was just recently acquired from an estate in the historic district of Willimantic, Connecticut. The family had owned the gun for over 100 years, and was most likely shipped home by a Union soldier as a souvenir. It has always been in private hands and is "fresh" to the antique arms market. The gun displays absolutely perfect untouched patina throughout. You couldn't hope to find a more perfect example of an original Fayetteville musket that was absolutely "there" in the battlefield, and has remained totally untouched for over 140 years. The gun bares all the characteristics of a Type III including the date, standard pattern lock, "S" shaped hammer, large front sight, and saber bayonet lug. The lug is not present on the gun, but there is no doubt you can see the imprint of where it was. It could be debated that the lug was milled off during production, or it was intended for a lug but never received it which is sometimes seen on the Type III/Type IV transitional muskets produced in early 1864. The "FAYETTEVILLE" marked lock is correctly dated "1863" with an Eagle and "C.S.A." stamped below. The metal has an even plum/brown patina overall, and the 33" barrel is stamped "V P" over an Eaglehead motif at the breech. The rear sight is the correct three-leaf M1858 type, while the front sight is the early large Fayetteville type as previously stated. The wood has no chips or repairs, and no cracks to speak of. There is just one very faint age crack forward of the second barrel band on the left side, and a tiny 1/2" check behind the lock. The original varnish has turned dark and shows signs of probably being stored in a hot attic for many many years. The cartouche on the left side of the stock is just barely visible in the right light (not quite legible though). The patina and untouched look and feel of the wood is just incredible. The initials "FA" are period carved just behind the rear barrel band on the right side. Original brass triggerguard, and the brass buttplate is stamped on top "C.S.A.". You will notice that the C.S.A. markings on original Fayettevilles is very distinct. The "C" and "S" are quite curvy, while the "A" is just slightly further spaced. Both brass barrel bands are correctly stamped "U", and again all the brass pieces on the gun have a perfect untouched look. The sling swivels looks to have been removed during the period of use. The forend cap, which would have also been brass, is missing as well as the ramrod, which would have been a typical Springfield "tulip head" style. The action functions tight and flawlessly, and the nipple is the clean original. The bore is dark and shows considerable use with only traces of original rifling remaining. If you are looking to buy an exceptionally high condition Fayetteville, expect to pay $25-35,000 for a gun that probably managed to see little actual service in the war. However if you are looking for an absolutely 100% authentic and untouched example that without a doubt was used in battle during the American Civil War, look no further.
