Rare Mid-19th Century San Francisco Percussion Plains and Target Rifle by John Bach

Description:
NSN, .50 Caliber, 34" heavy octagon barrel a fine, bright bore that has some minor freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome and well-proportioned rifle that has a mottled gray patina along the length of the barrel, with evenly distributed spots of dark brown freckling throughout. The muzzle is turned for a no longer present bullet-starter and the front sight blade is missing, although the sight base is still present in the dovetail. The maker marking is still clear and legible on the top barrel flat: "J. BACH / SAN FRANCISCO CAL." behind the rear sporting style sight. The lock has a matching gray-brown patina and is unmarked, although there is a small silver escutcheon on the right side with a previous owner’s initials engraved: "C.J.P." The action still locks firmly in both half and full-cock, and the double-set triggers are fully functional. The rifle has a wedge-fastened sporting style stock with German silver wedge escutcheons, and exhibits numerous small handling marks and minor surface blemishes scattered throughout the old oil finish. Additionally, there are some with-the-grain cracks at the wedge escutcheons on either side, at the lock screw bolster on the left side, and at the buttplate on the left side behind the cheek-piece. There is some flattening to the points of the checkered wrist, and the patchbox lid, while functional, rests slightly proud of the bolster plate. A brass-tipped wooden ramrod is included. John Bach (b. 1824 & d.1905) was a San Francisco gunmaker who was in business from 1852 & 1874. German by birth, Bach would emigrate to the United States as a young man, and made his way to San Francisco, where he established his shop, earning a reputation for making high quality target and sporting guns. He was well known in the Bay Area and his rifles were highly prized by target shooters and sportsmen. This example of his work is in good-very good condition, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Antique;
