Springfield Model 1866 Trapdoor Rifle, with Sling
Description: Springfield Model 1866 Trapdoor rifle, with leather military sling. .50 CF cal., 32.5" barrel is marked "46680" at left with corresponding number at receiver breech, has standard sights. "High Arch" breechblock is marked "1870/ (eaglehead)/(crossed arrows)US" at hinge. Walnut full stock has steel fittings including buttplate marked "US", slotted/grooved ramrod. Mfg'd 1870. Only 11,533 Model 1866's were produced. The overall length is approx. 52"". The 32.5"" 50 Government caliber (50-70) barrel has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling. The barrel is a smooth bright mixed with brown patina. This Model 1866 is numbered 46680 on the reciever side. It has the high and long Model 1866 interior arch. It has a smooth gray-brown patina. The stock is excellent with sharp edges and minor wear. It has no cracks or chips. The swivels are present and it is equipped with a Model 1868 cleaning rod which is most likely correct for this early type rifle. The action functions correctly. Hammer holds on safe, lock and half lock. Condition is good, the metal has dark coloration, the stock sound with mild marks and non structural cracks from age and military use, the entire rifle covered with an uneven coat of old varnish. Action is crisp, bore clean with scattered oxidation and good rifling. No rust or corrosion. Barrel is NRA classed as Very Good. BATF classed as antique.
