Turner Rifle by Schemann & Wirsing, Cincinnati, Ohio - approx. 40 caliber
Description: Up for sale is an antique muzzleloading rifle marked on the barrel "Schemann & Wirsing, Cin. O." This is a "Turner" rifle, made for the German immigrants who formed Turner societies in the mid 1800s. A major area for these societies were in the Cincinnati, Ohio region. There were quite a few members who volunteered for the civil war to fight on the Union side. They had their own rifles made. After the war, they did march in parades with rifles. From what I have read, the Turner societies emphacized physical activities like gymnastics and held competitions for many years. We have their influence to thank for including physical educaiton in our schools. This rifle is in good condition - showing the elements of the Turner rifles, such as the bayonette attachment near the end of the barrel, the iron ball on the end of the ramrod, and the eyelets for the carrying strap/sling. See photos for details. Schemann & Wirsing are listed in Hutslar's authoritative book on Gunsmiths of Ohio - see photo of information. It references that Wirsing and Schemann made "fullstock percussion rifels with bayonet lugs and sling swivels made for Germans who consituted Col. McCook's 9th Regt. OVI, serving in Tenn." Note that there is a crack at the wrist, but it appears to have been very well repaired. Again, see photos. I am open to reasonable offers. Thanks for looking! Note - the caliber is approximate - about 40 caliber, but a little larger if you measure into the rifling grooves. A prior owner replaced the nipple - I would not recommend firing this rifle as it is an antique and is being sold as a collector's item. FInally - note that I live in California, and therefore must collect sales tax to turn in - my listing price covers this sales tax cost of 7.25% that I have to pay. Shipping is also included!
