Very Rare M1842/51 Bavarian Rifled Musket Civil War Import
Description: I am offering a very rare Civil War imported M1842/51 Bavarian Rifle Musket in museum quality condition. These rarely seen rifles are easily recognized because of their unique rear sight. I have seen estimates of only a 1000 up to 3000 of them imported during the war. Most of the written information that I have seen comes from the book, “European Arms in the Civil War” by Schwalm and Hofmann. They estimate that only about a 1000 were imported. Supposedly these rifles, equipped with their “elbow” rear sight, were part of a trial that did not go well and therefore the rifles were not adopted by the Bavarian Government and became surplus. How they wound up in the U.S. is still not 100% clear. It is believed they were imported by one of the agents bringing in weapons early in the war. The ones brought in were purchased by the U.S. government and there are no recorded purchases by the Confederacy. It seems that any of the ones encountered in the U.S. have the “elbow” rear sight if they indeed still retain it. Most often they are missing. This specimen remains in outstanding condition. It is completely unmarked externally except for the numbers on the rear sight graduated to 1450 and some numbers on the ramrod. I believe the ramrod is an original but I do not know if its original to this rifle. It is heavy with a thick shank and has no threads on the end. It looks a little like a Potsdam type but there are no threads inside the tip cavity. The stock is amazing and shows very little use. There are a couple of little chips in the ramrod channel and a little gouge in back of the lock plate but that’s about it. The smooth lock plate metal gives the appearance of having something similar to case colors at one time. The barrel has a pleasing uniform grayish brown coloration and no pitting. There is a little scuffing around the muzzle which I guess is “bayonet rash”. The action works great in that the hammer holds on the first and second cock and falls when the trigger is squeezed. The barrel is full length at 41 1/8” and the bore is around .70. The bore is dark but the rifling is crisp. I doubt you will find a better one of these Civil War imported M1842/51 Bavarian rifles. They are rare but one this nice may present a once in a lifetime opportunity to own. SOLD Antique: Yes |
