VIRGINIA Antique JOHN STANLEY Full Stock .54 Caliber LONG RIFLE Dated 1849
Antebellum Era Made in the BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS
Description: VIRGINIA Antique JOHN STANLEY Full Stock .54 Caliber LONG RIFLE Dated 1849
Antebellum Era Made in the BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS
Here we present an antique John Stanley Full Stock Long Rifle made circa 1849. John Stanley worked as a gunsmith in Laurel Fork in Carroll County in Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. His obituary from 1896 stated that he was one of the first settlers of Carroll County and he was nearly 100 years old.
This is a large, long example of a long rifle and is bored for .54 caliber. It would have been very good for large game to include deer, bear, elk, and bison. It is a solid and workmanlike gun that features a brass trigger guard and pistol grip as well as a small brass patchbox. It also has double set triggers. This is quite the rifle!
The overall condition is very good. Original patina. “John Stanley 1849” is inscribed on the barrel by the maker. The stock and forend are in good shape with average wear. There is a short, stable split along the grain behind the patchbox. The action is strong. The bore is dim with strong rifling.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 46 inches.
Caliber: .54 Percussion
Overall condition as seen in photos.
