Swiss 1851 Feldstutzer Peabody-Werder Conversion Prototype 10.4x38RF

Description:
One of only two known Peabody Werder style breech-loading conversions of the Swiss 1851 sharpshooter rifle. This is an early 1851 Feldstutzer as the maker- Johann Muller of Bern, born in 1800 - died in 1848, indicating a trials gun. The lock plate has a crown over BF mark, this is the trade mark of Beuret Freres of Liege in Belgium, who obviously provided components. In the mid 1860's the Swiss Army had the Vetterli repeating rifle
in development. As a stopgap measure, the decision was made to convert existing percussion muzzle loading rifles to breech-loaders. This is a 1866/67 prototype that lost out against the Milbank Amsler trapdoor conversion. The Government also purchased 15,000 Peabody rifles in the USA, also as quasi-stopgap-measure-for-the-stopgap-measure while the conversion program was underway. The 1851 Feldstutzer lock has no half cock position, the block will drop as the hammer is cocked and snap shut when the trigger is pulled and the hammer drops. There is no lever like on Peabody or Martini rifles. Nice stock cartouche of the 10. Bern Sharpshooter company, all matching serial numbers, furniture with some case hardening, nice & intact walnut stock, 29.5" barrel with bayonet socket, bore with strong rifling and some minor frosting. Crisp action and double set trigger. Silver owners cartouche on the left side: R. Maeder. OAL=49.6", weight=11.25 lbs.  Add this museum quality rifle to your collection.
