Antique Scoped Percussion Target Rifle by Nelson Lewis of Troy, NY
Description: NSN, .44 Caliber, 28 1/4" heavy octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some traces of mild freckling within the grooves. This is a very handsome rifle, built along classic New York lines ca. 1870. The barrel has an overall smooth, plum-brown patina along its length with some traces of brighter blue still present on the protected areas, and thin silvering along the edges of the barrel facets. The top of the barrel is clearly marked, "N. LEWIS MAKER TROY, N.Y." just behind the vacant rear barrel sight dovetail. The back-action lock is unmarked, and has a freckled gray-brown patina that gets slightly darker on the hammer. The original double-set triggers are fully functional, with the sear breaking crisply and cleanly without any creep at all. The walnut stock is fastened by a single wedge and has a few minor handling marks and small surface blemishes scattered about the otherwise fine original varnish finish. The stock fittings consist of: pewter forend cap, German silver wedge escutcheons, spurred trigger guard, crescent buttplate, and a lobed, unengraved patchbox, and there is an unadorned shadowline cheek-piece present on the left side of the butt as well. The rifle is not equipped with iron sights, but does have a period unmarked scope, 33 1/8" in length, and with clear optics (about 4x power) and intact crosshair reticle. While the scope itself is contemporary to the rifle, the mounts are modern and in excellent shape. The rifle comes with a non-original, modern-made false muzzle, and a period brass-tipped oak ramrod. This rifle is very similar in configuration (minus the scope) to a Nelson Lewis-made example illustrated on page 980 of "The New York State Firearms Trade & Vol. 3" by H.J. Swinney and Tom Rowe (2003). This is a fine New York State percussion rifle, made by a well-known upstate maker, and would make a splendid addition to any collection.
