Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Exceedingly Rare Brass Barreled American Flintlock Half Stock Pennsylvania "Kentucky" Long Rifle with A. W. Spies Lock, Tiger Maple Stock, & Swan Engraved Patchbox, Converted to Percussion, .45 Cal smoothbore/paradox, mfg. circa 1835. In the world of Kentucky rifles a brass barrel is about as rare as they come. In all our years of collecting I can only recall seeing one other and it very well may have been this very gun. The unsigned solid brass octagon barrel measures 34 3/8" long and retains it's original dovetailed brass blade front sight with iron single leaf rear sight. The top flat of the barrel is nicely engraved over the breech and ahead of the rear sight. The lock is marked "A. W. SPIES / WARRANTED" (of New York City) and has been converted from flint to percussion early during the era and possibly by the maker himself. The brass barrel and furniture have a pleasing smooth mustard color throughout while the lock shows a rich dark plum patina. The Tiger Maple stock is beautifully figured and features a fluted cheekpiece with silver plated brass starburst and crescent moon inlays. The stock has an attractively worn untouched finish overall showing a 2" long grain crack on either side of the forearm and a securely repaired vertical crack ahead of the rear lock screw. Further the toe of the buttstock and a portion of wood above the lock have been neatly refitted during the period of use. Finely engraved brass patchbox depicting a swan surrounded by floral motifs. The plain patchbox door is a nicely made old replacement which is opened by pressing the spring steel toeplate. Original brass buttplate, trigger & triggerguard, lock screw escutcheons, and ramrod pipes with solid coin silver forend cap. Original wood ramrod. The action is strong and functions very nicely. The nipple is a relatively clean original which is just slightly flattened from dry firing. The bore is smooth for use with ball or shot yet has paradox style straight rifling cut into the last few inches of the muzzle. A highly attractive and original rifle that will be a centerpiece among even the most advanced collections. When will you see another?
